congress is close to striking an 11 the hour deal to keep our nation from plunging off the fiscal cliff but he says the two sides still have ground to cover and the time is running out. that one-two punch that will kick in, hours from now, on january 1, and if the president and congressional lawmakers cannot hash it out, the united states could fall into another recession. here is part of the framework for the agreement. the bush tax cuts would expire for incomes above $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for families. unemployment benefits would continue for one year and the estate tax would go up. we have learned lawmakers are still working out the automatic spending cuts. president obama weighs in saying middle class families can not get caught in the middle. >> the last thing folks like the folks up here on this stage can afford right now is to pay an extra $2,000 in taxes next year. middle-class families can not afford it, businesses cannot afford it, our economy can not afford it. >>trace: traders on wall street are watching the president's comments. the chance of going over the

'reilly. thanks for watching us. our top story tonight, the last ditch effort to avert the fiscal cliff. president obama met with congressional leaders for several hours at the white house today to try to hammer out a deal before taxes go up on more than 160 million americans. after the meeting, the president presented a new plan to avoid the cliff and said he was modestly optimistic. >> we had a constructive meeting today. senators reid and mcconnell are discussing a potential agreement where we can get a bipartisan bill out of the senate over into the house and done in a timely fashion so that we met the december 31st deadline. given how things have been working in this town we have to actually wait and see until it actually happens. the one thing that the american people should not have to wait and see is some sort of action. so if we don't see an agreement between the two leaders in the senate, i expect a bill to go on the floor. and i have asked senator reid to do. this put a bill on the floor that makes sure that taxes on middle class families don't go up, that unemployment insurance is stil

reform trying to sell a fiscal cliff deal. he is was on meet the press. republicans weren't happy with that appearance because he they felt he was blaming them. new development in the last hour or two, vice president biden has come back from delaware. he is now here at the white house. he has had two phone calls with mitch mcconnell. in previous budget battles, joe biden has been the closer on these deals. his coming back from delaware might be a sign they are moving a little closer. that will be something to watch. the whole thing about changing cpi and reining in cost of entitlements, republicans are judging in on that. take a listen. >> one of proposals we made was something called change cpi but basically makes an adjustment in terms of how inflation is calculated on social security. highly unpopular among democrats not something supported but to strengthen social security in the long time i'm willing to make those decisions. >> reporter: in the morning, the president seemed to be opening the door to rein in those entitlements and then you heard harry reid shut the door on it.
